Volunteer Spotlight: Colin Finn

April is Volunteer Appreciation Month, and we’re happy to share stories and insights from some of our volunteers across the country. Colin Finn is a former CARES Academic Intern, completing his internship remotely. During his internship, he completed work on a cycling peer-to-peer campaign and created marketing materials. Colin now lives in Nashville, works in a pharmacy, and serves on our Event Committee and supports our Emerging Leaders Board.

What inspired you to volunteer with CARES? Do you have a personal connection to cancer that makes CARES meaningful to you?

I was first introduced to CARES through mutual connections with Executive Director Karri Morgan, where I learned about the chance to gain hands-on experience in the production and preparation of large-scale nonprofit events. I feel a close connection to the CARES cause, especially their mission to advance patient-centered treatments, as I lost my father to cancer.

Can you share a memorable experience, event, or moment from your time volunteering?

It’s always a fun experience, attending and helping set up events! For the most recent Scott Hamilton & Friends silent auction, I was asked to drive a remote-controlled Zamboni. I was quick to take on the opportunity, but also a bit nervous, so I practiced driving it around the break room! Volunteering is always a great experience.

How has being involved with our foundation changed your perspective on cancer research? How do you feel knowing you’re supporting life-saving research?

It has shown me how much support happens behind the scenes in pursuit of the goal of turning cancer upside down. It’s always eye-opening to hear about the progress being made. The experience is incredibly motivating and makes me grateful for the opportunity to support life-saving research.

What would you say to someone considering volunteering with CARES?

I would say to anyone considering volunteering with CARES that there are many ways to contribute, at any scale. Stay open to the experience—you never know how one event can lead to a lifelong passion for a meaningful cause.
