Amy Zack

Thank you, Amy, for sharing your story to inspire hope and raise awareness about the importance of continued investment in cancer research.

What were your biggest challenges during your treatment?

The worst thing was the sheer exhaustion. I ended up hospitalized because my kidneys started to shut down. It seems I was dehydrated from sleeping too much. Also, the trial I was on drove me into menopause. That was not fun with its own set of side effects.

Did any treatments or trials in your care come from cancer research?

I was fortunate enough to be part of a second phase trial for Letrozole, a drug that is now part of the standard of care for hormone receptor-positive Inflammatory Breast Cancer. Phase two focused on a longer treatment window than the successful phase one window.

Has surviving cancer changed your outlook on life?

Absolutely. Surviving has given me a better sense of who and what matters most in life, as well as a desire to focus on giving back.

What message would you share with someone diagnosed with cancer?

While the unknown is terrifying, gather your family close. It doesn’t matter if that’s biological or your circle of friends. Not everyone will be able to deal with it, so don’t be surprised if some people disappear from your life. I always said cancer truly showed me who my true friends are and who they aren’t. Look for resources locally and ask a ton of questions. I firmly believe that you need to be your own biggest advocate to fully trust your medical team to do what’s best for you
