Volunteer Spotlight: Kim Navarro
April is Volunteer Appreciation Month, and we’re happy to share stories and insights from some of our volunteers across the country. Kim Navarro is a former Elite Ice Dancer. Representing the US, she and her partner Brent Bommentre are two-time US Bronze Medalists, World Team Members, and Olympic Alternates who made many appearances in Scott Hamilton & Friends. Kim is the Skating Director at Snoopy’s Home Ice in Santa Rosa, California, where she volunteers her time to organize Sk8 to Elimin8 Cancer at Snoopy’s Home Ice, and shares her talents as a choreographer and performer in our Celebration Ice Show.

What inspired you to volunteer with CARES? Do you have a personal connection to cancer that makes CARES meaningful to you?
Two people inspired me to participate with Scott CARES: Charles Schulz and my dad, John Navarro. I lost my dad to leukemia 8 years ago. This loss rocked my family's lives, and now I feel forever invested in the progress of cancer research. Charles “Sparky” Schulz, who created so much magic for the world and those of us here at Snoopy's Home Ice, suffered from cancer at the end of his life. When we were planning how to celebrate Sparky's 100th birthday three years ago, partnering with Scott Hamilton's foundation was the perfect fit.
Can you share a memorable experience, event, or moment from your time volunteering?
The skating shows during the Sk8 to Elimin8 Cancer weekend have all been beyond memorable! The generosity of the skating cast to perform in this fundraiser blows my mind. It's also been really special for me to get to skate at my home rink for this event.
How has being involved with our foundation changed your perspective on cancer research? How do you feel knowing you’re supporting life-saving research?
Being involved with Scott CARES has reminded me that there's a lot more work to do. And it has made me extremely grateful to Scott Hamilton—an icon in our sport—for doing this work. Part of the funds raise through these events go to local clinical trials. This local element has been one of the most rewarding parts about being involved with Scott CARES.
What would you say to someone considering volunteering with CARES?
DO IT! And please come to Snoopy's Home Ice November 8th & 9th, 2025!
