April is Volunteer Appreciation Month, and we’re happy to share stories and insights from some of our volunteers across the country. Claren Luk is an aspiring young skater based in the San Fransisco Bay Area. Claren has participated in Sk8 to Elimin8 Cancer at Snoopy’s Home Ice every year the event has been held, and through her volunteer fundraising efforts she has raised a total of $10,318 for cancer research.
What inspired you to volunteer with CARES? Do you have a personal connection to cancer that makes CARES meaningful to you?
My grandma Josephine had final stage lung cancer for five years, and she passed away in July 2024. I was really sad because I loved her so much. I wanted to do something to help other people so they don’t have to lose someone they love. That’s why I joined CARES—to make a difference and help people who are sick with cancer.
Can you share a memorable experience, event, or moment from your time volunteering?
One of my favorite moments was performing on stage! I got to be in the group number as one of the Top 20 fundraisers, and I also did a solo performance as one of the top fundraisers. I was quite nervous for the performance, but it also made me really happy and proud to perform for something so important.
How has being involved with our foundation changed your perspective on cancer research? How do you feel knowing you’re supporting life-saving research?
Being part of CARES made me feel more hopeful. I learned that some cancers can be cured now because of new research, and that’s really amazing! I feel proud to help because maybe one day, no one will have to die from cancer anymore.
What would you say to someone considering volunteering with CARES?
I would say go for it! It’s really fun and you get to help people too. If you know someone who had cancer, this is a special way to show you care. You can help make the future better and bring more smiles instead of tears.
