Volunteer Spotlight: Maggie DiPenti
Maggie with Scott in Juneau, Alaska in 2023
April is Volunteer Appreciation Month, and we’re happy to share stories and insights from some of our volunteers across the country. Maggie DiPenti is a cancer survivor and Sk8 to Elimin8 Cancer participant who now volunteers every week, remotely helping CARES with data management.
What inspired you to volunteer with CARES? Can you share a memorable experience, event, or moment from your time volunteering?
Autumn of 2023 happened to be remarkable. Less than a year before, I was challenged by a cancer diagnosis and surgery, followed by months of chemotherapy. While still recuperating, I heard about CARES’ Sk8 to Elimin8 Cancer event in Juneau, Alaska, scheduled for late September. Not having much stamina, how could I possibly think about traveling to participate? I conditioned for weeks, just in case, and sure enough, I took my fuzzy headed self and set off North to Juneau, Alaska, with my raingear and steadfast husband and adult kids in tow. I don’t ice skate, but, fortunately, the organization includes opportunities for almost everyone to join in. With a few thousand generous dollars in fundraising donations from my loving, supportive family and friends motivating me, I completed the Memorial Walk to honor those in my life affected by cancer.
At a small group gathering for fundraisers, my heart was touched when Scott told his story and explained the CARES commitment to funding cancer research for treatment to spare the patient from harsh side effects. I could write a book about my experience with debilitating side effects! At the Juneau event I officially became a peer volunteer, enjoyed the experience more than I could have imagined, and asked if there was absolutely anything I could do in the future to stay connected.
Since then, I volunteer regularly in my hometown and sometimes travel to other CARES events and celebrations. Last November in Nashville, I met so many dedicated people like me who understand the mission and importance of CARES.
Volunteering for CARES keeps me positive and gives me hope. It has become a significant and fulfilling part of my life, and I plan to stay involved for a long, long time.
